In 1932, amateur golfer Phil Young hit what he believed was an almost perfect putt. However, the ball unexpectedly veered off line.
Instead of assuming the problem was with his stroke, Phil Young began to question the golf ball itself.
He decided to have the ball X-rayed to find out what was happening inside.
The results revealed that the core of the golf ball was not centered, causing the weight inside the ball to be unevenly distributed.
This discovery inspired Phil Young and Fred Bommer to research ways to create a golf ball that was more stable and consistent.
From a Discovery to the First Titleist Golf Ball
After years of research and development, the first Titleist golf ball was introduced in 1935.
What began with a specific problem during a putting stroke eventually became the foundation for a philosophy focused on precision, consistency, and performance — qualities that continue to play an important role in every golf shot.
